Day 1 (July 12) of a week-long tour for six Swedish golfers was spent on Wigtownshire County's pleasant links course.

While not very long, the course is no pushover on a windy day. I'd say we had about 18 mph winds which was enough to make it a bit tricky now and then. Tees, fairways and greens were in good condition - greens not very fast but for the most part true. The layout is interesting and varied, but I can't really single out any hole as being particularly good and memorable. For me, holes 10 and 11 were probably the most fun to play because of the large mound that dominates both holes and makes it a bit tricky to determine the best line of play if you're a first-time visitor.

The clubhouse is fairly basic but provides all the necessities.

We received a friendly welcome and were able to get an "open Fairways" discount even though it was Saturday.

A true links course - good wide undulating fairways, tight lies, small greens and .... wind. Well struck tee shots will see the ball run for ever. The greens were true (early June) and, although firm and therefore not receptive to the high approach shot, excellent to putt on. The signature hole is probably the Par 4 Stroke Index 1 12th. To cut the corner of the dog leg is possible but beware of the lie for the 2nd shot. This is not a Portpatrick or a Stranraer, but it is well worth playing and has its own character. The club seems to be run on a shoestring but the staff are very pleasant and helpful.

Brilliant course and kept in superb condition. A must for anyone in the area. It is a test of golf, but is suitable for all handicaps.

One of the best courses in coastal Scotland.

Corisand Lee (England) 15/11/01

You have to play at courses like birkdale, to play a better course. The scenery is beautiful overlooking the sea and the course is in magnificent condition all year round. It might not be the longest course, but it can test the best of golfers in other ways. The greens are very small, and very hard to hit in windy conditins. Overall you have to play this course to appreciate its mainy qualities, and would recommend it to any keen golfer.

WELL PRESENTED LINKS. SOME SHORT HOLES BUT A GOOD TEST. EXCELLENT TRUE GREENS BUT COMES INTO OWN WHEN THE WIND BLOWS. WATCH THE LOCALS TO SEE HOW TO PLAY IT. BEWARE OF THE ELECTRIC FENCE ON THE FIRST IF YOU HAVE A BAD HOOK!
