Thorney Park Golf Course Player Reports

I`ve played here a few times with a member.

The course is nicely presented with some nice holes. Fairways are lush, but the greens are very slow.

For a short course the premium is on accuracy. Most par 4s are a drive and a flick with a wedge. The Par 3s though are very tricky, often requiring a mid to long iron to well guided greens.

Post golf is disappointing, food choice is limited if you don`t want chips or something fried. Ambience in the clubhouse is similiar to that of a pub.

Played this strange little course for the first time just last Sunday. Situated just off a motorway and with the train lines running along one side the front nine is a little noisy but the back nine is more tranquil.

A little bit on the short side and with slow mainly flattish greens you’d think it should be easy but it protects its self with some very narrow fairways and some thick rough and thickets of saplings and bushes.

Too many of the holes are unremarkable and there are too many that mirror the previous one but three of them are top class and all feature water the par 3 seventh is down hill to a green with water back and front. The ninth is a par fore which calls for a draw off the tee then you have to make a decision risk the pond or lay up. Water plays a part on the last as well the pond shouldn’t come into play but the stream cutting the fairway in two and winding up to the green might.

Condition was average and either this part of the south east has had a lot more rain then Ealing or it has problems with drainage.

Played here midweek February 06 (£11 using a Green Free voucher ).

This course is right next to the M25 & M4 ,a railway line ,Heathrow airport & has pylons running across it .I've ignored this course in the past for the above reasons .This sounds like a recipe for disaster & yet amazingly despite all this it's a more than decent course .Not what i was expecting at all. Originally it was 9 holes with a 2nd 9 now added .

There are very few weak holes & some of the holes are exceptional particularly the 9th & 18th which are superb risk & reward holes . The 18th is an unusual short par 4 of the like i haven't seen before which has a stream which snakes up the middle of the fairway right up to the green.Other particularly notable holes are the 6th ,7th ,16th & 17th .

The newer back 9 is more mound sculptured giving the holes their own identity & is very well designed .Good tees & fairways ,the greens were reasonable for the time of year but the course doesn't seem to drain well .

Ignore the surrounding here & give this course a go & like me you might be pleasantly surprised .

Played here recently after quite a bit of rain and the course had held up very well. The greens had been worked on and top dressed but the ball still ran truly at a reasonable speed. The whole of the course seems to be maintained to a high standard with defined fairways and well kept bunkers.

Sequences of holes in both nines tend to go "up and down" but you will need to be straight as trees, especially on the outward half, line the holes. The individual holes, although not bad, aren't very inspiring until the 7th is reached. This requires a medium iron over water and sand to a shallow green. It actually looks harder than it is. The pond shouldn't really be in play but don't be long! The 9th is a well shaped dogleg hole with the first requirement being a good tee shot to leave any chance of finding the green positioned behind another pond.

There seems to be a bit more room between the holes on the inward, and newer, half and the greens are of a generally varied, and more interesting, design. Holes to note are the dogleg 11th played to an elevated green, the short par four 13th with decisions to be made on the tee, the narrow 500 yard 15th which has a rolling green to negotiate, the slicers paradise which is the 16th and the short 17th which seems to have water everywhere. The 18th has to be seen to be believed. Standing on the tee for the first time you will find it hard to see anywhere to play the ball to safely. Out-of-bounds left and an artificial stream meandering towards the tee down the middle of the hole!

The course still seems to be a work in progress as the bunkering differs in several places to that shown on the yardage book. It is also a pity that with only one par 4 over 380 yards there was not land enough for a couple of longer two shotters to strengthen the challenge.

There is a small but well stocked pro shop and excellent catering with all staff encountered friendly and helpful.

Unfortunately I can't not mention the distractions. The M25 with it's constant noise, is only a short distance behind three greens, a busy railway is just as close to another couple and tall pylons with their cables seem to be everywhere on the front nine.

I can't remember exactly what I paid for 18 holes mid-week, £21 or £22 I think, which represents reasonable value.
