Erlestoke Golf Club Player Reports

OK I was on holiday and yes the sun shone brightly for the entire round but I left Erlestoke GC after my first visit with a very good feeling inside. Myself and a fellow player (a v.high handicapper) chose to play here as it was a handy escape from our nearby family holiday and we could not have chosen better. Despite getting a bit lost on the way and arriving 20 mins late for our tee time it soon became clear that traffic on the course wouldn't be an issue. There was hardly a sole there and in 4 hours we never saw anyone infront of us or directly behind us, a rare pleasure indeed.

The course starts very strongly with a good variation of holes in terms of length and style and the first 3rd finishes in stunning fashion with the almost vertical downhill 170yd Par 3 7th which offered fabulous views across the downs from the tee. Once at the base of the hill the course settles down and does become a little repetitive in outlook merely changing in length but then the interest picks up again as you begin to use the slope again and finish the climb with a blind uphill teeshot on the 17th Heartbreak Ridge. Even the short Par 4's towards the end and tweaked enoug that they aren't too easy. A gentle 18th finishes the course and despite yet another 3 put I was very happy with our round and would highly recommend the course to anyone passing or staying in the area.

I play off of 19 and found the course a reasonable challenge and could/should have shot my handicap with decent putting. Off the yellows it measures around 6100 yards so shouldn't be treated without some respect. The course was generally in very good condition, the welcome was friendly and the proshop well stocked. We didn't really use the facilities but the clubhouse looked modern & welcoming enough should we have had more time to hang around. Looking forward to next year.

P.S Mid week green fees are £26 which is OK if not cheap for the timing. Maybe should have checked out 2fore1!!

We had an excellent day at this course on June 10th. The greens had recovered well since being tined, and were true and well kept. For a "new" course, all of the members of the society were impressed by the condition and the layout, with only the 17th attracting any criticism, which may have been as a result of the climb to the tee!

A fair opening hole, followed by a tricky uphill par three, sets you up for an interesting round, and, whilst the 8th to 16th will benefit from a few more years growth, if you play here when there is any wind blowing, you will find most of the holes present a challenge.

An excellent society venue, thank you Erlestoke Sands.

Just over ten years old, Erlestoke is predominantly still a long way from maturing. There is some nice surrounding scenery and a few good holes to go with it: the long Par 4 (off the yellows, Par 5 off the whites) third, the ‘drop hole’ Par 3 seventh and the uphill Par 4 sixteenth.

However, after a preferable front nine, the majority of the back nine is spent zigzagging back and forth along adjacent holes. Sparse young trees planted between the fairways do little to prevent an undeveloped parkland feel.

When you add in the poor quality of the greens (apparently they’ve just been sanded) and continued drainage problems during the winter months, for the most part Erlestoke still very much looks and plays like a new course.

It’s not for want of trying, but, despite the comments below, there’s still a long way to go here.

3.5/10

Recommended. The 7th is undoubtedly the highlight, but the rest of the course is in excellent condition and well worth playing. The facilities are also first rate, with a well-positioned bar overlooking the 18th hole and 1st tee. Tip - try to save some energy for the hike from the 16th tee all the way back to the top of the hill!

I am secretary of a thriving golf society, we have played Erlestoke Sands for the past 5 years, and now use the venue for our final fixture and prize-giving.

The course is interesting, well laid out, a joy to play, and the welcome second to none. Our members love coming back each year. It makes my job of chasing members to attend very easy.

I would recommend Erlestoke Sands to anyone, if you don't believe me, just try it once to be converted.

Erlestoke Sands is a very friendly course with first class facilities. The course is stunning, beautifully kept and challenging, but not too punitive to the odd wayward drive.

Highly recommended.
