Puttenham Golf Club Player Reports

Ian Thomas (England) 13/05/08

A mature heathland and woodland course that can trace its history back to the 19th century. Although not especially long, it can be tight and tricky in places with a few eccentricities, such as the intimidating position of the first tee, the graveyard to collect errant slices on the 1st, the cricket pitch to collect wild hooks on the 2nd and the 240yd SI 18 par 3 off the yellows.

Local knowledge is very valuable as there are a number of shots where the landing areas are blind, and to hit a good score you need to be on the correct side of the fairways and greens.

There are some very interesting and challenging holes on this well maintained course. Overall a pleasant golfing experience.

This is an excellent course, although a fair few of the tee shots can appear a little on the tight side. The condition of the course was superb, with very smooth greens in particular.

The welcome was was very warm and the members I spoke to (I'm assuming they were members) were a credit to their club.

One thing you do need to be careful of is not to take your kit bag into the spike bar after a shower though. Judging by the (over)reaction of the barman, that's a sin worthy of a hefty flogging.

Mal Willoughby (England) 26/05/02

Played the course 24/05/2002

We received a good welcome, and everyone was very helpful. New clubhouse was a delight.

The course was magnificent, the weather was a little wet but it did not dampen the the spirits , this is well worth a visit.

This is an absolute gem of a course with interest on almost every hole. A 220yd par 3 does not make for an easy start and the difficulties continue with tight tree-lined fairways - there are very few occaisions you can let rip with the driver! Greens are small but very good, and great use is made of natural features to provide unusual obstacles, such as gorse hedges. All in all a cracking course - if only I could get in as a member!

Peter Campbell (England) 05/10/01

Played this course on 3/10/2001.

Fairways like carpets ,tees and greens very well maintained. Course was well designed challenging ,but not terrifying. No problems with water or bunkers. Some long walks between holes.

Clubhouse was being rebuilt and toilets, and handbasins were in a porta kabin.

Stuffy dress code in clubhouse. Jackets must be worn in the dining room etc.

an old, pretty and tight heathland course providing a test of your golf. off the white tees there are no short par 3s; the four par 4s provide the opportunities to save shots, but you will need to hit it straight; the two par 5s are relatively short but are difficult to hit in two because of the way they are laid out. a course guide would come in handy. good but smallish greens. two drawbacks, first the long sock rule; second, very occassionally cagoul clad pilgrim way hikers will wander obliviously across when you are teeing off at the 3rd. if you want to use the main bar, you will need to change but ties and jackets are not required and the members and staff are not stuffy. the spike bar has the dimensions of a large kennel.
