Goring and Streatley Golf Club Player Reports

Goring has long held a reputation as being one of the best courses in the area and with the club now offering a cracking deal of booking online for £22 to get a days golf my regular playing partner (The long hitting Mr Munns) and i decided to head down and check it out. Goring is set in a small valley and the course plays as 3 sections. Holes 1-4 begin your walk up the side of the valley, holes 5-13 play along the top and holes 14-18 take u back down the valley towards the clubhouse.

The 1st four is a tidy start to any round albeit a tad hard on the legs, with the 3rd being a classic members hole where i'm sure past experience can save u a stroke. The section that runs along the top, while appearing a little flat in places still requires u to hit the correct side of the fairway or your ball will run in to trouble. The 10th is a bugger to drive and to hit the right approach on, i ran through the back of the green here and i'm sure this happens on many an occasion. 13 requires u to be able to shape your drive to really get at the green. After crossing the road u begin the walk home and the course really does come alive here, 14 and 15 play tricks on your mind from the tee and its prob best u weigh up your options before taking them on. 16 is a cracking long par 3 where the weather will either help u or slap u on the arse. 17 is a beast of a par 5 where anything from 1 stroke to 12 is a probability while 18 is just the sort of hole where u want to get a really good drive away. Overall i loved this course, sure it has its faults but they are few and far between and the nature of the land lends itself to a thinking mans round of golf and there are not to many of those in the area. It lacks the freshness of some of the newer courses in the area but if i'm being honest to many new course's look, almost silicon enhanced rather than relying on the natural features of the land provided for it looks ( think jordan compared to say, kate moss) i can't think of any reason not to return as i feel the course more than lived up to its reputation and the welcome from both the pro/members was a warm one oh and some of the views provided were cracking.

What a course! Playesd here yesterday on 2 fore 1's and for £21 for a round offered incredible value. The greens had fertalizer or something on them which didn't really affect them but apart from that not a single complaint. The 1st 4 holes go directly uphilee (the course is on 1 side of a valley) and it really is quite steep but once you get there you're afforded some quite stunning views. Fairways in ideal condition, bunkers were perfect and it offers a really stiff test. All the par 5's are reachable and most of the par 3's are quite short but I reckon all in all you'd do weel to shoot to your handicap here first time round. no water to speak of but dozens and dozens of well placed bunkers. The 2nd, a dogleg left leaving an uphill shot to a very well protexted green, was my favourite hole.

A very interesting golfcourse. Thank god it isn't played in reverse as holes 2-4 rise some 200 feet which takes quite a lot out of you and I'm only 28. Sadly youget it all back in one hole 17 with a stupidly small green 10 paces back to front in a depression whic makes it almost impossible to stop an iron on the putting surface. This aside the course was well looked after and the grens were excellent for the time of year, quick and true. Spesial not to the 2nd and 7th both par 4's and both over 460 yards not an easy par. All in all well worth the viasit at least when you can catch your breath on the 5th tee.
